Mien Late Longan Sapling

Origin and History: The Mien Late-Crop Longan (specifically, the Mien Thiet Late-Crop Longan from Khoai Chau, Hung Yen) originally descended from the Hung Yen nhãn lồng (basket-wrapped longan). Through a process of natural mutation and selection, a new longan lineage was created. The variety is named after Mr. Mien and Mrs. Thiet, whose family owned the mutated longan tree that was officially recognized as the elite mother tree (cây đầu dòng) of this variety.

Fruit Characteristics: The Mien Thiet late-crop longan is currently considered the most delicious longan variety in the Northern region. The fruits are plump with very thick, highly fragrant, and intensely sweet flesh. Notably, they ripen late in the season, from September all the way through November (solar calendar).

Economic Value: Today, the Mien Thiet late-crop longan is a key crop cultivated in the North, providing high and stable economic returns for farmers.

Propagation and Seedling Quality at Xuan Khuong Nursery:

• Mien late-crop longan seedlings are currently being asexually propagated at Xuan Khuong Nursery using the branch grafting method. Thanks to vegetative propagation, the saplings inherit all the best traits of the mother tree.

• These grafted saplings exhibit excellent growth and development capabilities, ensuring high yields, stable fruit quality, and a rapid time to first harvest.

• The asexually propagated saplings are robust, possessing strong resistance to pests and diseases, as well as high tolerance to both waterlogging and drought.

• The saplings reach a standard height of 75 – 85 cm when ready to leave the nursery.
