CRITICAL STAGES TO NOTE IN CARING FOR GREEN-SKINNED POMELO

Green-skinned pomelo is currently a popular choice among many growers. During the process of selling saplings, we receive many requests for consultation. Today, we share with orchard owners the essential stages to keep in mind when caring for green-skinned pomelo trees:

Why is Green-Skinned Pomelo Chosen for Cultivation?

Green-skinned pomelo is sweet, delicious, and has thick flesh. The peel, seeds, and leaves of this plant also serve as beneficial traditional remedies for health. Therefore, green-skinned pomelo saplings are widely favored by consumers.

Green-skinned pomelo maintains a stable price ranging from 40,000 to 70,000 VND per fruit, while delivering high profits to growers. Consequently, it has been one of the choice fruits selected by many farming households as a model for wealth generation in recent years.

However, simply buying saplings, planting them in the ground, and watering and fertilizing them daily is not enough to guarantee fruit production. To ensure trees develop well and achieve maximum productivity, technicians at the Gia Nguyễn nursery advise farmers to note several technical care guidelines for green-skinned pomelo as follows:

  • First 2 months after planting: Fertilization should begin as the root system starts to develop. Farmers can use DAP 18-46-0, mixing it with 8–10 liters of water to water the tree.

  • 1 year old: Mulch with composted grass, rotted straw and debris, coconut coir, and animal manure to help roots develop rapidly.

  • 3 years old: Chemical fertilizers should be discontinued. Instead, use animal manure and micro-biological foliar fertilizers to provide a complete supply of trace elements for the pomelo. This fertilization method helps the pomelo achieve its highest output, assisting farmers in realizing their goal of generating wealth from green-skinned pomelo cultivation.

Fruit Management and Productivity

To ensure green-skinned pomelo yields high productivity and brings substantial economic benefits to help farmers prosper, growers must first pluck off all young fruit during the first year.

  • Second year: Retain only a few fruits, increasing the quantity gradually in subsequent years. This practice ensures the pomelo produces the largest, highest-quality fruit.

In recent years, to save time and money in farming, many households have utilized ecological garden biological products (chế phẩm sinh học vườn sinh thái) for green-skinned pomelo trees, receiving exceptionally positive results. This method not only helps trees grow and develop well, increases disease resistance, and reduces certain pests and diseases, but also boosts productivity by 20% or more.
