Sapodilla goes by quite a few other names such as Sa pô chê, lồng mứt, and hồng xiêm. This tree reaches a height of up to 7 meters and exhibits very good growth vigor. Its leaves are long-oval in shape and green, and its flowers are white. The sapodilla fruit is elongated-ovoid with an average diameter of 4 to 8 cm, ranging in color from brown to light yellow. Inside the brown skin is a soft, reddish-brown flesh that is exceptionally sweet and delicious.
The sapodilla tree is quite undemanding, resilient, and relatively pest-resistant. It takes about 1.5 years from planting to fruit harvest. As a tropical tree, it grows poorly and fails to flower when temperatures drop too low.
If you can proactively manage your irrigation water source, you can plant sapodilla at any time of the year. In the South, it is usually planted at the beginning of the rainy season, whereas in the North, it is planted in spring around February and March.
Sapodilla saplings are currently propagated via grafting or seed sowing. Seed propagation results in a longer growth period and inconsistent quality. The grafting method offers many advantages, such as a longer tree lifespan and earlier fruit production. You should select healthy saplings that are about 50 cm tall or taller, well-proportioned with complete plant parts for planting.
Because sapodilla is a medium-height woody tree, it requires an appropriate planting density. The distance between two trees should be about 4 meters, which equals approximately 600 trees per hectare.
Land Preparation: Dig planting pits measuring approximately $60 \times 60 \times 60\text{ cm}$. Apply basal fertilizer into each pit consisting of 10 kg of well-rotted organic manure, 1 kg of Superphosphate, and about 1 kg of agricultural lime to disinfect pathogens in the soil. Fertilize 30 days in advance before bringing in the saplings for planting.
